The State of Colorado

First Inhabitants, Settlements, and Territorial History

Even before humans arrived at what is now called Colorado, many large animals, such as horses and buffalo, along with bison, roamed the plains. The first people in Colorado consisted of many Native American tribes, such as the Puebloans, who hunted buffalo for meat. They settled by making pottery out of adobe to hold various things, like water. Some Puebloans, who couldn't make adobe homes, lived in huts, called wickiups. Soon enough, in 1806, Zebulon Pike led an expedition and eventually found "a new land"-Colorado. It is now inhabited by thousands of people, who enjoy all the scenery and mountains.
There is only one territorial history known for Colorado. A Spanish army once confronted the Native Americans who lived there. Wearing armor and yielding strange wepons, the Native Americans fended off the army with the only defense they had- bows and arrows.

Buffalo were a big part of Puebloan diet, and were hunted for food.
